Marine Pollution Response - High Sea Section

This section exists with its assignment of tasks since 1980. It is responsible for all national and international tasks regarding the reconnaissance of and response to marine pollution. We are developing concepts for emergency towing and for all questions concerning places of refuge. The Marine Pollution Response Section (high Sea) represents the Federal Republic of Germany in several international expert panels or advises them. This include expert panels of the EC as well as panels of the BONN-Agreement (North Sea), the Helsinki-Convention (Baltic Sea) and the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC) of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

Furthermore the Federal Republic of Germany is contracting Partner in several bilateral and trilateral agreements:

  • with Denmark and the Netherlands (DENGERNETH)
  • with Denmark and Sweden (SWEDENGER)
  • with Poland (Administrative Agreement for Pommer Bight)
  • Emergency towing agreement with the Netherlands
  • Regional and sub regional agreements about aerial surveillance and satellite data

The CCME fulfils the obligations which arise from these agreements on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany. This section co-ordinates the pollution response in CCME`S crisis staff and as On-Scene-Coordinator at sea. As part of the maritime competence section we develop strategies and techniques for counter pollution. We run or participate in numerous exercises each year to ensure the readiness of our staff and equipment. Further more we attend national and international meetings to provide technical contributions. We also organise such meetings ourselves.
